    >Back to School!

    >I’m starting an eight week writing workshop today. I’ve taken a class here and there but usually just a one day thing. This will be a much longer investment in time and effort, so I hope work doesn’t get in the way of it. At the end of the workshop, we students will hopefully have a roughly 8 minute piece to read at a graduation show. I’m excited to have something new to perform since the five readings I’ve done over the last year and a half have been the same piece just tweaked a bit each time. The last time I read it was at the People’s Improv Theatre and was awesome. I felt like I had tweaked it perfectly and performed it in a way that was fitting of me and the subject matter. Now I can move on to another story and hopefully get it in top shape to get that same feeling. What a rush!

My long term “plan” is that I can merge the two pieces together along with another 8 or 10 minute story to creat a one person show of sorts. I put “plan” in quotes because it’s not really a hard and firm plan just an idea — I don’t even know if I actually want to do a one person show of any kind, but it’s good to have something to aim for I suppose. Either way, I am excited about class, meeting the other students and working on something new. I think I’m going to craft the story about smuggling in Juicy Fruit to Dad in jail, getting busted and him ratting me out. That’s a sure fire funny tale. It will either be that or the Marvin Zindler blog entry about Dad trying to kill my mom. I definitely need help in telling that part of the story. I want to find just the right places for laughter without ruining the real drama and also make sure it doesn’t come off as melodramatic.

Blah, blah, gotta get my school supplies together! Oh, and Christian’s shows at Gotham are going so great. He has three more shows tonight and one tomorrow so go check him out if you can. He’s so awesome!

It’s a Small (Deaf) World, After All

I related a funny story about the small Deaf world to my friend the other night and decided to write it down:

When I was about 19, I moved to Ohio and worked as a teller during the day while attending paralegal school at night. An older deaf couple we’ll call the Wilsons regularly visited the bank but never came to my window. Finally, one day I saw them come in and I waved them over. Of course, the first question the husband asked was how I knew ASL.

“Mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, aunts & uncles, everyone all Deaf,” I told them.

    ASL in the Raw

Saturday night I saw a childhood friend who was in New York on vacation. Our grandfathers and our parents grew up together at the deaf school in Oklahoma, and my brother & I grew up with him and his sister. The eight of us, at one time, were inseparable even moving into the woods of Montgomery together and eventually buying matching trailers. We talked and talked and danced and laughed till 4:00 in the morning. The next day I woke up and my hands were stiff and sore from all the signing!!!

I was excited to tell him about “ASL in the Raw,” the show by and for the Deaf produced by and starring Doug Ridloff and Jason Norman (pictured below) which I am promoting this November at Comix. Maybe he’ll come back to NYC for that one. For you New Yorkers or those in town for the Thanksgiving holiday, pencil it in your calendar. Or, better yet, buy your advance tickets at ComixNY.com.

    >Random Stuff

    >After “Scene Change” and a 15 hour work day, I was beat. It was too late at night to take the subway alone and the taxi strike meant no one wanted to pick me up for a trip to Queens. So I slept on Molly’s couch and went to work yesterday in the same suit I had on the day before. I would have happily gone home after waking up but I had to meet with the head of XM’s programming & production. He was overseeing production of another event we had called “Unmasked” featuring Ron of “Ron & Fez” interviewing Jeff Garlin. Jeff was pretty funny which you’ll be able to hear for yourself on XM in a few weeks once the final edit is complete.

Tonight I’m having dinner with a childhood friend. His parents grew up with mine at the deaf school in Oklahoma, and my brother & I grew up with him and his sister. The eight of us, at one time, were inseparable. His mom and sis came to my and Finny’s wedding, but I haven’t seen him in years. I can’t wait to tell him about “ASL in the Raw,” the show by and for the Deaf that I’m promoting this November…maybe he’ll come back to NYC for that one. I’d love to take him and his partner to a movie premiere I have tickets to for tonight but it’s not closed captioned for the Deaf. Instead we’ll chill in the Meatpacking District and catch up on each others lives. That’s much better in my book! Finny flies home from LA today and is so cool that he’s going to cab it straight from the airport to which ever restaurant we choose. (Flight cancelled so he’s going to be a surprise guest in Buffalo on Mike Birbiglia’s “Secret Public Tour” with Comedy Central.) He’s so awesome and unselfish. Christian won’t complain too much though as I know he is going to LOVE my old friend. He’s quite a character.

No luck or progress on the precinct / 311 / parking on the sidewalk business. It’s very disconcerting and frustrating to know that you can’t do anything because of red tape, passing the buck and bureaucracy. Dealing with the precinct has been very disconcerting and is more worrisome than any car parking issue. The NYPD’s 114th Precinct has not gotten the memo about the motto: “Courtesy – Professionalism – Respect.”

    >Scene Change Re-Cap

    >Amazing night! Even with a 28 person crew, 12 members of the press, 17 cast members, a long list of NYTVF VIP passholders, general public ticket holders and a show that was in the showroom prior to “Scene Change,” it went off without a hitch. Proctor & Gamble’s director and head of production were a dream and the TV pilot is sure to be a success, regardless of whether or not it’s picked up for broadcast. P&G gave me and Molly two beautiful flower arrangements, so we’ll have another week or so to be reminded of a job very well done. I think the NYTVF will happily work with us next year on another event. We’ll see.

    >The Latest Ballyhoo

    >There is WAY too much going on in the next couple of weeks! Scene Change debuts tomorrow night at 10:30 as part of the NY Television Festival and is expected to sell out. Add a TV crew of 28 and the sketch groups and it’s a whole lot of moving parts. I’m excited but bracing for a long, tiring day and night.

Christian is headlining at Gotham Comedy Club next week, the 13th thru 16th to be excact. We’re hoping for good crowds as it’s his first time headlining a major comedy club for a whole weekend in NYC if you can believe that! He’ll be doing 45-ish minutes of almost all brand new material. No kidding, the fool has been writing up a storm, performing, tweaking and polishing a brand new set that is now really tight. We’ll be hanging out after the shows every night and hope to see YOU there!

For the rest of the scoop, check out The Latest Ballyhoo.

On a NON-producer / work related note: I have been calling 311 about a few local businesses parking cars on the sidewalk which is, accordingly, all beat to hell, cracked and buckled under the weight. This morning there were NINE cars. NINE! Nearly every morning I yell at the men gathered around said cars and wildly gesture to which ever vehicle is blocking the most space. I look them directly in the eye and they still don’t say a word. Because I’m dressed in heels and a suit? Because they don’t speak English? Because they know they’re breaking the law? All of the above? Tonight, due to the taxi strike, there were four policemen standing on opposite corners outside my building. I yanked out my iPod earbuds and asked them about the situation. Is is actually illegal? Yes. Does 311 help? You should call your precinct…it’s faster and they’ll respond. What’s my precinct? 114. So, starting tomorrow, instead of 311 I’ll be chatting with my local police precinct. I love our apartment and my view of the City. Why can’t my walk to the subway be just as pleasant?

There’s a killing to be made for whatever traffic cop gets to ticket all those cars all day, every day.

    >Spoiler Alert

    >I’ve been sick with a bad cold since Thursday morning so have been taking things fairly easy. That means lots of leisurely time at the lovely Astoria Park (home to the city’s largest pool and nary a tourist to be found) with books, crosswords and my anipals or at the movies. The Halloween remake generally stunk. I knew better than to see it, but I love a scary movie and am a Rob Zombie fan…well, his music anyway.

I remember seeing the original Halloween on opening night back in 1978. Yes, I was only seven, but that never stopped Mom from taking me and my brother to the movies plus we could interpret for her, if needed. It was a few days before the Halloween holiday so the theater was packed — not an empty seat in the house and some people even sat in the aisles. There is a reason John Carpenter’s version has had so many sequels: It is a masterpiece. The body count is low and there is very little blood or gory murder scenes, but the music coupled with the slow, steady build up of anticipation made the tension in that theater thick as morning fog. By the time Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode is panting in relief at having jabbed Michael Myers in the eye with a hanger only to have him stand up menacingly behind her unbeknownst to her, the audience was in a frenzy. No exaggeration, a FRENZY! We — and I mean the ENTIRE audience — were screaming at full velocity variations of, “Look behind you!” “He’s still alive!” and “RUN!”

I don’t know that there will ever be a movie that makes a whole theater feel that way again. Not that there aren’t good directors or stories to be told but that we, as a viewing audience, have been spoiled. I hope I’m wrong. I do enjoy a good horror flick.

I saw The Exorcist when I was four. It came out in ’73 but we rented it on reel to reel with closed captioning so watched it at home. Horrifying. But not as horrifying as “Carrie” which I saw when I was five.

    Braggy McBragalot

I have spent the last three days in near isolation trying to work through the basic overview of my book proposal. It sounded easy enough when I started out a few weeks ago: Deaf parents, lived in the woods, a couple of attempted murders and voila! You have yourself an “overview.” Yeah, right. My tone was all wrong. I’ve been working in PR too long and drafting too many pitches and proposals. The overview I had submitted to my agent (HEE HEE!!!) looked like a business plan. Booorrrinnng. Finally at 1:40 AM yesterday when I blogged, I had done it. I found the thread that pieced all the sections together and injected the tone I aimed for: no self pity, hints of crazy tales and some funny one liners. Now with THAT out of the way, I can re-do my Table of Contents and flesh out my chapter summaries.

The whole process reminded me of when I started Ballyhoo Promotions. I simply COULD NOT move forward with trying to get clients until I had a website and I couldn’t build a website without first settling on a name. Christian likened it to the band who is always brainstorming names but never actually plays a song. I begged to differ and insisted on thinking longer and harder till finally settling on Ballyhoo. Once I got over that hurdle, I built a website in one day (not the current version online now), took on my first client and the rest is history.

I wish I could say I found my M.O. for creative work but they’re so different. A company name is so specific and an overview is, well, an overview…a broad sweeping summary.

Now I know that writing will be more difficult; there will surely be more writer’s block to plague me. But, whatever, I’m glad my hurdle was lept.

I stayed sober, watched no television, went no where except for my morning coffee and stayed at my computer even when I was making no progress. Was the weather nice? I have no idea and went out too early in the morning to tell. I even kept the shades drawn so as not to be tempted.

    >Warrior for the Deaf

    >I received a 25 page letter (!@!%#$!!!) from Dad yesterday. While it’s full of great stuff, my Loved, Daddy blog entry isn’t all that entertaining…just an update, I guess. Christian is in Miami so I’ve been hunkered down in my apartment writing my proposal, researching and reading a lot so not much fun to report. Unless you count having two mice come into my office reeeallly close to my bare feet as I was typing at my desk.

The first was so silky and shiny brown and tiny and cute that I just watched it for a few minutes. After I lifted my feet, of course. EEK! It wasn’t too unlike Christian’s hamster Aretha. But then the other one came out and I thought, “Oh no, I can’t have this.” So I waved my hands around to make them see me and they didn’t care! It wasn’t till I screamed at them, “Hello?! You gotta GO!” that they skedaddled.

First off, you all are just awesome and creative and hilarious, too. I said this in my comment but it stands to be said again and again. You guys ROCK!

So, yeah, yesterday there was a tornado in Brooklyn and some crazy flooding in the subways as every New Yorker already knows. I just walked to Queensboro Plaza and hopped on the 7 train, no sweat. Okay, a lot of sweat, but no problemo. I was tempted to walk over the bridge so I could add “flood” to my list of reasons (9/11 and blackout)I walked to/from the City but I had a meeting to get to. Getting home after HipGuide.com’s 8th anniversary party was a bit of a buzz kill, though. I should have just hopped in a cab, which I eventually did do, especially at the late hour. Ding dong cheapskate took over for a spell. I gotta stop doing that: trying to save a buck when it’s super late at night and/or I know there’s potential bad subway business.

Today I just signed coffee without any words and the girl went ballistic, excited to be going on the coffee run. She knows more signs than Christian!

So add coffee to the growing list that includes: Sit, down, roll over, go around (she turns around in a circle), play dead (I sign a gun pointing at her), wave, be cute (where she rubs her eyes with her paws), and lots of words not in sign language on top of that.

11:49 PM EDIT: Okay, I’m better. It was a stressful, very long day that I’m glad is winding up. I’m not so freaked out about my proposal since my last entry, thankfully. But I’d still welcome any suggestions for a title. I’m kind of stuck on thinking of plays on words having to do with sign language since that really sets my story apart from other memoirs. Whatever. I’m sick of me so I can imagine how YOU feel.

I’m tired and busy and August SUCKS for comedy. I wish I were in LA with Christian with all our friends who seem to be moving out there in droves. >Anyone Have LexisNexis?

    >Thanks to the eagle-eyed Stacy (who I just happily met at the Laff Stop in Houston), we know the name of the murdered bartender from Conroe that my mom silently wondered if My Jailed Deaf Dad killed. Stacy actually found the info through the very link I provided in my earlier entry:

Anyone know how I might research such a thing? I Googled 2854 San Jacinto River Murdered but it yielded other results. The possible hit & run is too broad to even begin a search.

Turns out that link wasn’t useless. Third result down is this site. You have to scroll down the very bottom before coming across an article from the 6/25/85 Houston Chronicle that includes this excerpt:

Eason said his office is also investigating whether Ward could have been involved in the strangulation of a Conroe barmaid in September. The body of Brenda Maureen Hackett, 25, was found under a railroad trestle near FM 2854 by a train conductor. Hackett had been sexually assaulted before she was strangled with a stocking.

So there it is. Pretty much exactly as Mom remembered minus the San Jacinto River part since the SJR doesn’t actually run under that bridge or road that I can tell. The “Ward” in the article was a man who was suspected in her murder but killed himself in Las Vegas. According to my Mom, though, Hackett’s ex-husband from California was charged.

So, I feel confident* that the police investigated the matter thoroughly enough to have excluded Ward and pinned it on the Ex Mr. Hackett. Dad just happened to know her.

    >I’m Exhausted

    >I’m spent. Emotionally and physically spent. It was a GREAT time spent with Christian. One night we hung out with Stacey (pre-order her book!) and an old family friend. My mom used to babysit him and he and his sister used to babysit me. Then there was the mini-reunion of me and a few friends from Elementary/Jr. High/High School. That was a load of fun and a nice reminder of just why I love Montgomery so much.

And then yesterday, of course, there was the four hour visit with My Jailed Deaf Dad followed by a nearly three hour dinner “interview” with my mom. Yesterday was overwhelming emotionally — a lot of painful memories and domestic violence mixed in with such fond memories of my life there. A complex oxymoron. Just as I was thinking I need a few days to recover before I get back to the business of writing, I get a phone call from a literary agent. There’s no rest for the weary.

Maybe when I get back from the “Just for Laughs” comedy festival in Montreal I’ll be back to myself. That’s a lot of amazing comedy and networking with the biggest big wigs in the business in one weekend. If I can’t recover after a trip there, then I’m a lost cause.

Check out my blog entries from last year’s festival on the Comedy Central Insider blog.

Feeling confused and melancholy and motivated and excited all at once. I’m a mess.
